TeacherReady® - Faculty
Who are the TeacherReady® faculty?
Each TeacherReady® class will have online instructors that are experienced teacher educators and/or expert teachers. The individual unit instructor will provide you feedback on the assignments in each of the seven units and all field experiences. In addition, you will work with a mentor teacher in your local community to complete required field experiences that include interviews, observations, meetings, and small group instruction. The mentor will provide immediate feedback on most field experiences. You will also work closely with the TeacherReady® Program Mentor who will answer your questions about paperwork, tuition payments, certification exams, and any other procedures.

Program Director and Instructor: Robin Largue, Ed.D.
Robin Largue has been an educator for over 30 years in the secondary and post secondary arena. Much of her work has been in the area of writing and delivering professional development in a variety of forms and for various audiences. Since coming to UWF she has served as Coordinator of Community Partnerships within the College of Professional Studies and has supervised a variety of projects. These projects include the following: development and delivery of the Alternative Certification Program for Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa County teachers (in our third year), development and delivery of an online alternative teacher training program (TeacherReady®), development and delivery of Families Building Better Readers (a state wide parent professional development), development and implementation of an online reading professional development for teachers in 2 counties, implementation of all college continuing education efforts, and iBINDER® (an online professional development tool for educators and mentors. Dr. Largue serves on numerous State of Florida Professional Development, Accountability and Standards Committees.

Lead Instructor: Russ Yocum, Ed.S.
Russ Yocum has a B.A. in Psychology, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, and an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership. Currently, he is working to complete his Ed.D. in Diversity Studies at the University of West Florida. Mr. Yocum has 10 years of educational experience in a variety of settings including as an instructor while in the United States Air Force, substitute teacher, Title I Classroom Assistant and a Certified K-6 Teacher. Mr. Yocum has served as grade level chairperson, literacy committee chairperson, and a resource teacher. In addition, he has received the honor of being named School Rookie of the Year (2006-07) and the Santa Rosa County Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Quarter (2007). He also chaired the team which won the Florida Region 1 Elementary Reading Leadership Team of the Year (2007-08) school year, and he was co-winner of the International Space Station Name-the-Node 2 NASA Learning Challenge (2007). At present, Mr. Yocum is a Santa Rosa County Teacher on Special Assignment reporting directly to the Institute for Innovative Community Learning where he serves as Research Associate and Lead Instructor for TeacherReady®. |
Program Mentor: Katie Tener, B.S. Katie received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of West Florida in Spring 1997. Energized by the college atmosphere, she began her career with the following fall semester. In September 2006, she joined the Institute for Innovative Community Learning as the Office Administrator. Her extensive knowledge of the TeacherReady® program and special ability to communicate easily and effectively with the students made her the ideal candidate for Program Mentor. As Program Mentor, she begins working with perspective students as they enter the program and continues until their goal of becoming a professionally certified teacher in the state of Florida has been achieved. She is the primary contact when completing required paperwork, making payments for tuition, and assisting with questions or concerns about the program or curricula. Her work is not only with the students enrolled in the program but with the faculty, as well. She meets with the faculty regularly during each unit to discuss student’s progress, feedback from students, and any changes that should be addressed. |
Director of the Institute for Innovative Community Learning: Janet Pilcher, Ph.D.
Janet Pilcher is the Director of the Institute for Innovative Community Learning. She recently served as the dean of the College of Professional Studies at the University of West Florida . During her tenure as dean, the College of Professional Studies was considered the most innovative and technologically advanced unit on campus. Dr. Pilcher has published and presented over 50 refereed publications, and she generated approximately 15 million grant and contract dollars. On average, she produces about 22% of the total grant dollars at the university. Using this funding, she has also worked collaboratively with UWF Design Team members to design a number of state-of-the art technology products, including STEPS, The Lesson Architect™; PlanRight™; and TeacherReady®. Dr. Pilcher continues to an active community member in the greater Pensacola region. In particular, she initiated the Pensacola Hometown Learning Community in partnership with the City of Pensacola and the Escambia County School District.

Assistant Director and Instructor: Holly Ellis, Ph.D.
Holly Ellis has been in education for over 10 years. Currently, Dr. Ellis serves as the Assistant Director of the Institute for Innovative Community Learning at The University of West Florida. Dr. Ellis has a B.A. in Elementary Education, a M.Ed. in Education and Training Management Subspecialty with an emphasis in Instructional Technology, and a Ph.D. in Instructional Design and Development. Although she occasionally serves as an adjunct instructor, Dr. Ellis has spent most of her career as an instructional designer at the University of West Florida. She has served on the design and development teams to create resources for educators. These projects include STEPS and the Lesson Architect™, PLANright™, iBINDER®, and ICLcenter. She has also written paper-based and online support materials for the tools and delivers training seminars. She seeks ways to apply her classroom experience to ideas for innovative design projects, and she teaches as an adjunct instructor at the University of West Florida.

Instructor: Temitshia Brown, Ed.S. Temitshia Brown has taught middle school science for 10 years. During this time, she received the title of Teacher of the Year. For over half of her career in education, Ms. Brown has been the chairperson for the science department in her school. In addition, Ms. Brown has served as a literacy leadership team member and a building leadership team member, and she has served as cheerleading sponsor. Ms. Brown also serves as a National Board Certification Training assessor, and she is affiliated with the Mobile County Educator’s Association, the American Educator’s Association, and the American Science Teachers Association. Ms. Brown has a B.S. in Nursing, a M.Ed. in Secondary Education with a focus in Biology, and an Ed.S. in Secondary Education. |
Instructor: Kristin Cain, M.Ed. Kristin Cain has been a teacher in Escambia County, Florida for 13 years. She has served as both a classroom teacher and a reading specialist. She has a B.A. in Elementary Education and a M.Ed. in Reading Education, and she is currently working on her Ed.S. in Educational Leadership. Ms. Cain has received the honor of being named a National Board certified teacher, and she is affiliated with the International Reading Association and the Florida Reading Association. |
Instructor: Heather Donofrio, Ph.D.
Heather Donofrio has been teaching for 10 years. Most of her career has been focused on teaching adult students at The University of West Florida and Florida State University, where she was nominated for a teaching award. More recently, she has also been teaching younger learners. Dr. Donofrio has a B.S.B.A. with a specialization in Marketing, a M.A. in Communication Arts, and a Ph.D. in Communication Theory in Research. |
Instructor: Sandra Harwood, M.P.A.
Sandra Harwood has 24 years of experience in education. She has taught a variety of subjects, including Speech, Drama, English, Language Arts, and Social Studies; and she has taught in Louisiana and Florida. In addition to her classroom experience, Ms. Harwood has also served as a school administrator. She holds a B.A. in Speech with a minor in English and Education, and she earned a MPA with an emphasis in organizational management. Ms. Harwood has received the honor of being named teacher of the year on two occasions, and she has received the distinction of being a National Board certified teacher by The National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. |
Instructor: Kathy Heineken, Ed.D.
Kathy Heineken has been in education for nearly 30 years and has taught in elementary schools in Georgia, Florida, Kansas, and Colorado. She has taught students of all ages from PreK through the university level. She has been involved with literacy at all levels through adult. She has been a speech pathologist, elementary school teacher, and reading educator. She has also taught at Pensacola Junior College and is currently the Director of Student Teaching and Advising for UWF. She has supervised Teacher Education students from UWF in their field experiences. She works closely with Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Baldwin County to provide UWF students with exemplary teachers. She continues to volunteer with local schools to improve literacy rates.

Instructor: Julie King, Ed.S Julie King has a B.A. in English, a M.Ed. in Secondary Education, and an Ed.S. in Curriculum and Instruction. She has been an educator for over 10 years, and she has taught both middle and high school. Currently, Ms. King teaches English at Bishop State Community College in Mobile, Alabama. She is affiliated with the Alabama Education Association, the National Education Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the College Language Association. |
Instructor: Sarah Miller, Ed.D.
Sarah Miller has a B.S. in Elementary Education, a M.S. in Mild Disabilities, an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership, and an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Diversity Studies. Dr. Miller has been a special education classroom teacher at both the elementary and high school level, and she served as the special education department head. Presently, Dr. Miller is a member of the Leadership Development Program for the Baldwin County School District in Alabama. Dr. Miller has also received certification from The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and she serves as a reviewer of educational materials and textbooks for Corwin Press. |
Instructor: Anita Solarski, Ed.D.

Anita Solarski has been in education for over 20 years. She has taught elementary school and special education, owned and operated a preschool, and opened and directed an employer-sponsored child care center for the local hospital for children birth to five. She also gained experience working with families as the director of an early intervention program and a respite home.
These experiences prepared her to serve in her current role as an instructor at the University of West Florida in the Prek/Primary teacher education program, where she has taught for 10 years. Pulling from her background in working with families, Dr. Solarski has integrated service learning into the courses that she teaches. In this way, she has worked with the community to develop placements for her students that benefit the agencies as much as her students. She has also served on the organizing committee for the Florida Association for Service Learning in Teacher Education, provided training for the State for the Early Steps (early intervention) team training, and developed parent booklets for what to expect as young children develop and suggestions for how parents can help. |
Instructor: Colleen Starr, M.Ed. Colleen Starr has been in education for over 20 years. She has taught at public schools in Texas and Florida and currently serves as a literacy coach for the Santa Rosa County, Florida School District. Ms. Starr has a B.A. in English and a M.Ed. in Reading; and she has received Florida K-12 Reading certification, Florida Secondary Language Arts certification, Florida Reading Endorsement certification, and Florida ESOL Endorsement certification. She has also received the honor of receiving National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certification. Ms. Starr is affiliated with the University of West Florida Professional Education Council, National Staff Development Council, International Reading Association, Florida Reading Association, Florida Secondary Reading Association, Florida Literacy Coaches Association, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Council of Teachers of English, and Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society for Women Educators. Ms. Starr received the 2008 Florida’s Region 1 Middle School Literacy Coach of the Year award, the Phi Delta Kappa Outstanding Teacher of Northwest Florida award, and the Gulf Breeze High School Teacher of the Year. She was also listed in the Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers, and she was nominated for the Cambridge Who’s Who Among Executive and Professional Women in Teaching and Education and the Disney American Teacher Award. |
Instructor: Katie Strength, M.Ed.
Katie Strength has been a classroom teacher in Escambia County, Florida for 13 years. In addition to her experience as a classroom teacher, Ms. Strength has served as grade level chairperson and is a member of her school’s leadership team. Ms. Strength has a B.A. in Primary and Elementary Education, and she earned a M.Ed. in Reading Education. She has been awarded the honor of National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certification, and she continues to mentor her peers in technology efforts. |
Instructor: Kimberly Thomas, Ed.S
Kimberly Thomas has a B.S. in Early Childhood/Elementary Education, a M.Ed. in Reading Education, and an Ed.S. in Education Leadership. She is continuing coursework in the doctoral program at the University of West Florida. Kimberly is certified in Elementary Education, Reading, and Educational Leadership. Kimberly has served as an Elementary School Teacher, Reading Coach, and Reading First Grant Coordinator. As the Reading First Grant Coordinator, she served as a resource for students, teachers, and parents in 13 schools. Most of her work has been in the area of reading where she has co-presented at the state and international conferences in reading. She has received Certificates of Recognition in Academic and Achievement and Leadership in reading education. Kimberly has facilitated Reading Endorsement courses and served on the Florida Teacher Certification Examination Competency Board for reading education. Serving as a Professional Development Protocol Reviewer for the State of Florida, Kimberly conducts interviews, collects, reviews, and summarizes data to make judgments on the Protocol standards of school districts. Kimberly’s current position is a Research Associate at the Institute for Innovative Community Learning. She instructs students in the TeacherReady Program and is working to develop TeacherNotes Products. She also serves as an Internal Evaluator for The New Teacher Teach: Students Learn Academy.

Instructor: Jill White, Ed.D.
Jill T. White graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1993 with a doctorate in Technological and Adult Education. Her educational background includes 21 years of teaching experience in secondary, community college, and university education settings. In 2003 Dr. White served as the College of Professional Studies NCATE Coordinator. She is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering and Computer Technology at the University of West Florida where she directs and delivers the Career and Technical Education undergraduate and graduate curriculum online. Her research interests include information literacy, teachers’ concerns, and advances in Career and Technical Education. Dr. White currently serves as the liaison between the University of West Florida and Workforce Development in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. Her work with the Next Generation Learning Community (NGLC) has included coordinating workshops with FordPAS to afford teachers an opportunity to participate in curriculum redesign to meet educational reform.
